Burning
How to burn a candle? The first burn
The first burn is the candle's memory. Trim the wick to ~5 mm and burn until the melt pool reaches the edge. A short burn leaves tunneling. Container soy Soya Wax 50 and mold paraffin follow the same rule.
-
Shorten the wick
Trim the wick to ~5 mm before burning. Break off any carbon lump. A wet tip causes going out.
-
Complete the pool
Burn until the flame brings the pool to the edge. In Soya Wax 50 this first time can take 1–2 hours. Do not take breaks; tunneling forms.
-
Extinguish and the next burn
Do not bend the wick and dip it in the wax; gently cut off the flame. On later burns, again ~5 mm. Keep it away from drafts.
Tunneling and going out
A short first burn burns the middle and leaves the edge. A thin wick does the same. The going-out and tunneling guides are separate.
Cure
A new pour should wait at least 24 hours. 48 hours to 1 week for scent. Burning early spoils the flame.
FAQs
Is a tealight the same?
Yes: a short wick, a full pool. Because a tealight is small, the pool fills quickly.
How do I burn a wooden wick?
A dry tip, a full-width ignition. The soaking guide is separate.
