When and How Much Candle Fragrance Oil to Add?

Oil-based candle fragrance is weighed; the base's oil saturation is not exceeded. It should not evaporate when hot or fail to disperse when cold.

What is oil-based fragrance oil?

Rufus candle fragrance oils are oil-based, concentrated products; they are not for consumption and must not touch the eyes. They come in a glass bottle with a locking cap. Choosing a fragrance is personal; cold throw (unlit candle) and hot throw (while burning) are assessed separately.

How much fragrance?

Product notes say 6–10% for most fragrances, and 8–10% for some intense woody notes. The real ceiling is the oil saturation of the wax you use: on average 8% in Soya Wax 50. An 8% load for 500 g of wax means 40 g of fragrance oil; do not mistake milliliters for grams, weigh it. More fragrance is not always a stronger scent; excess leads to sweating, oil build-up and a drowned wick.

When is it added?

There is no single X degrees for every wax. Add the fragrance after the wax is off the heat, a few degrees before pouring. Too hot and the scent character evaporates; too cold and it does not disperse evenly. In soy, do not hold it at very high temperature for long. After adding, stir slowly in one direction for 1–2 minutes.

Testing and cure

With a new scent, take a small batch first. After the candle has cooled and waited at least 24–48 hours (ideally 1 week), open the lid and note the cold throw, then burn it to note the hot throw. Write down the recipe: wax, %, adding temperature, pouring temperature, wick.

FAQs

Is fragrance measured in ml or grams?

Weigh it in grams. The volume of a dense oil-based fragrance is not equal to water. The percentage is calculated on the wax weight.

Why does a candle sweat?

Fragrance beyond the oil saturation, a high storage temperature or an incompatible base–fragrance pair leaves oil on the surface. Reduce the load, store at 18–21°C, and run a small test.

Are essential oil and candle fragrance oil the same?

No. Candle fragrance oil is an oil-based scent formulated for wax. Not every essential oil is safe or compatible with the flame and wick. Use the candle fragrance oils in the catalog.
