Troubleshooting

Candle Troubleshooting: Sinkholes, Soot, Wet Spots

Most defects come from temperature, cooling, wick or fragrance load. Do not change the whole recipe at once.

Sinkholes and a rough surface

The wax was poured too hot, there is a large temperature difference between the container and the wax, or cooling is drafty/fast. With soy, pour after an even melt and cool in a controlled way; bring the container to room temperature. A small surface dip can be corrected with controlled hot air or a thin second pour, but it may leave a mark; if possible, even out the whole surface.

Wet spots and frosting

A wet spot is a local separation of soy from the glass; fast cooling and a cold container trigger it. Frosting (crystalline matte look) can be natural soy behavior; aggressive stirring traps air. For aesthetic container work, slow mixing, a warm container and a draft-free room help.

Soot, tunneling, weak scent

Soot: a long wick, a strong wick, excess fragrance/dye. Trim 5 mm before every burn. Tunneling: a weak wick or extinguishing the first burn too early. Weak scent: fragrance evaporation, a low %, not enough cure. Do not hold Soya Wax 50 at excessive heat for long; weigh the fragrance according to the oil saturation.

Storage

Protect Soya Wax 50 raw material at around 18–21°C, from excessive heat and from below 5°C. Keeping finished candles cool, closed and away from light also preserves scent and color.

FAQs

Why does my soy candle sink?

A high pouring temperature, fast cooling or an incompatible fragrance/dye is common. Lower the temperature, keep the container warm, and retry with a single variable.

Why does the wick soot?

Soot appears if the length is above 5 mm, if the wick is thick for the container, or if the recipe is overloaded. Trim, go down one size, and check the fragrance/dye.

How long should I wait?

At least 24 hours before burning for Soya Wax 50. A cure of 48 hours to 1 week is better for scent and surface. Even if it has cooled for unmolding, do not force it before 6–12 hours.
