Problem

Why does a candle tunnel?

Tunneling is when the melt pool does not reach the edge of the container. Most often the wick is thin, the first burn was short or the wick is long. Burn until the pool reaches the edge, and trim the wick to ~5 mm.

Why it happens

If the wick diameter is small for the inner diameter, heat does not reach the wall. If the first burn is extinguished after 20–30 minutes, a memory forms. A long wick soots but may not widen the pool. Because Soya Wax 50 is oily, a firmer wick by one step than for paraffin may be needed in the same glass.

Prevention in production

Fix the wick upright in the center (holder). Do not exceed the fragrance oil saturation (~8%); a suffocated flame enlarges the tunnel. Keep the pouring temperature within the SKU range. In a series, do not lock the size without a burn test.

What to do with a finished candle

Trim the wick to ~5 mm. On a safe, flat surface, burn until the pool reaches the edge (2–3 hours in most containers). With a deep tunnel, a controlled second burn is needed to distribute the heat evenly; do not melt the edge with an open flame. If it persists, move to a wick one size thicker or a double wick.

FAQs

Is a tunneled candle a waste?

The wax left at the edge does not burn. The first burn and the right wick prevent waste. With a deep tunnel, re-pouring or changing the wick is needed.

Can a wooden wick tunnel?

Yes. A narrow wooden wick tunnels in a wide jar. The width × model match and a holder are essential.
