Essential Candle Making Supplies Checklist
Starting candle making goes faster when wax, wick, fragrance, heat tools, and moulds are clear. This checklist groups the essentials.
Candle making looks creative; missing supplies stop the flow. At Rufus Concept we group candle-making materials into bases, heat tools, shaping, scent, and packing—so your first shopping list is clear.
Wax Bases And Additives
Wax is the spine. Soft jar candles favour soy wax; classic firmness and shine favour paraffin; natural honey notes favour beeswax; clear effects favour gel wax. For hardness and opacity, a little stearic acid helps. Log lot codes—same names can behave differently by batch.
- Soy: good scent carry, more matte tops.
- Paraffin: strong throw, smooth look.
- Beeswax: natural aroma, higher melt.
- Gel: clarity, special wick needs.
Wick Choice
The wick drives the flame. Match cotton or braided wicks to vessel diameter; try wood wicks for crackle. Scented and unscented formulas may need different sizes—test two in the same jar. Trim to 5–6 mm before each burn.
Melting Equipment
Double boiler or controlled heater, heat-safe pitcher, metal spoon, and digital thermometer are the core set. Boiling wax on open flame risks safety and aroma. A gram scale keeps fragrance and dye repeatable; millilitres mislead.
| Tool | Why | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Thermometer | Pour / fragrance °C | Keep visible |
| Gram scale | Repeatable ratios | 0.1 g helps |
| Double boiler | Safe melt | Watch water level |
| Heat-safe jug | Mixing | Separate dye pots |
Moulds And Shaping
Clean glass jars are enough for containers; for figures and gifts use a silicone mould. Dust moulds; early demould breaks edges. Metal moulds cool fast—give room-temperature patience.
Fragrance
Use candle-grade fragrance oil; food flavours or mystery oils can ruin the burn. Calculate load on wax weight and stay in the maker’s range. Write add temperature on the recipe card—too hot flashes top notes, too cold clumps the mix.
- Fix wax grams.
- Weigh oil to target %.
- Stir at recommended °C.
- Run a small burn test.
Decoration And Packing
Ribbon, label, and box carry the brand; keep melting plastics away from the flame. Use candle pigment for colour. Check wick centre before shipping. Buying base, wick, and scent together from Rufus Concept reduces half-kits.
Minimal Starter Basket
Do not buy everything first: one wax, two wick sizes, one fragrance, thermometer, scale, two vessels. Pour three tests, then add moulds or a second base. Essentials in the right order—base and wick first, scent and presentation next—make consistent candles.
Before series production, keep a one-page recipe per SKU: wax code, wick, fragrance %, pour °C, cool time. That page protects quality when you hand off to a helper. Labelled shelves stop emergency pours with the wrong base.
